How to Submit a CareFirst OPAP Authorization
For certain CareFirst insurance plans, OPAP authorization is required after a patient’s 6th
LIFETIME visit. An authorization request must be submitted through the online portal.
*PLEASE NOTE: OPAP authorization can only be backdated 3 days!*
1. Log in to the Carefirst Online Portal.
2. In the toolbar of the homepage, click Prior Auth/Notifications.
3. In the top right corner, click Add New and select Medical Prior Authorization.
4. Enter the patient’s Member ID number. You can also enter their Date of Birth, Last
Name, and/or First Name to help narrow the search results. Search. Select the patient
from the Results list and click Next.
5. In the Request Details box, leave Urgency as Routine and select Office for Place of
Service. Procedure, Diagnosis, and Provider Information fields will then appear.
6. To enter Procedure request information:
a. Click the magnifying glass Search Icon to search CPT codes.
