Hurricane
Hurricanes are types of tropical cyclones that can cause catastrophic
damage to coastlines and several hundred miles inland. Winds can
exceed 155 mph. Hurricanes can spawn tornadoes and microbursts
that can cause flooding. Hurricane season in the local area lasts from
June to November with the peak season being mid-August to late
October.
During weather events involving hurricanes staff
shall:
• Move individual(s) to the interior of the building, away from
windows. Do not go outside! If possible, move to the lowest
level or basement, but be aware of flooding in the lower levels
of the home/work site.
• Carry a flashlight with you and the “Go Kits” if possible. Protocols
• If the building is obviously becoming damaged, protect your-
self and the individual(s) as well as possible by getting under-
neath sturdy furniture, or mattresses or blankets and pillows.
• Stay in a safe area until the storm has passed. Communicate
your condition to your Immediate Supervisor.
If caught outside:
• If you are caught outside during a strong dangerous wind, find
shelter in a building or under another structure. Try to find
and get into a landscape feature such as a ditch or culver that is
lower than the surrounding area.
• Staying in a vehicle provides some protection, but vehicles may
also be moved in a dangerous manner during such storms. If
caught in a vehicle, keep the seatbelt on but duck below the
level of windows. Unless the storm is right on top of you, it is
safer to get out of the vehicle and find shelter in a building or
in a low landscape feature.
