Gibson’s Journey #2
Gibson and his growing family of five are currently
enrolled in the OAP (PPO) plan. How can Gibson save
money while keeping similar benefits?
(The OAP (PPO) benefit plans are changing this year, and their
out-of-pocket cost may increase.)
Gibson is seriously considering the HSA PPO plan for him and his family’s medical
benefits this year. He is a little worried about the deductible costs; it’s a large amount of
money. But the cost of the HSA PPO plan per paycheck is also a lot of money.
Gibson looks back at his health care costs for his family last year. His kids went to the
doctor for sick visits three times. His wife had her annual well-woman visit and Gibson
takes HBP medication. Gibson remembered that the Cigna app has a cost calculation to
determine what things cost.
In all, he spends about:
Last Year | OAP PPO New Year | HSA PPO
$75 per Dr. Visit $150 per Dr. Visit
$0 Well Woman Visit $0 Well Woman Visit
$120 for HBP Medication $48 for HBP Medication
These same types of service on the HSA PPO plan would be about $498 or less,
depending on how much he shops around for providers and services.
Besides the lower per paycheck costs for the HSA PPO plan, Gibson:
• Is also enrolled in the Limited Purpose FSA where he can put aside up to $2,700
for out of pocket health expenses.
• Has accident coverage for his family. He would receive cash for any accident
related incidents (kids falling or breaking bones). He can use this money to cover
his deductible cost, too!
Breaking down all of Gibson’s benefits and the benefits QSC provides for my family, it
makes sense financially to move to the HSA PPO plan! If he doesn’t, he will lose money.
