P. 113

Once again the power of positive thinking is an immeasurable tool in eradicating
needless worry from your life. Instead of worrying about something that may (but
probably won’t) happen, try replacing that worry with a positive thought. For
example, instead of fretting “I am going to be late for work today.” Say to your self:
“I will make it to work on time”. This changes the focus of your energy from negative
to positive. And as we already know, positive thoughts create positive actions.

On the other hand, however, a person walking around worrying “I am going to be
late” is creating a certain amount of negative energy with each worrisome thought.
And since we know that negative thoughts create negative energy, doesn’t it make
sense to stop worrying? It makes a lot of sense unless of course, you really do want to
be late for work. Try to keep in mind that while thoughts and words can sometimes be
the result of worry, they can also create it.

You can incorporate positive thought techniques with respect to worry in numerous
ways throughout your day. You can practise these techniques around other people, as
well. One way to do this is to be sure that you never take part in a worrisome
                   conversation.

If you do wish to participate in a fretful conversation, try to change the focus from
negative to positive. You can do this by adding such comments as “ I am sure
everything will work out for the best, after, all we are hard working employees” when
co-workers are huddled around the coffee pot, worrying about company lay-offs.
Perhaps your optimism will rub off on your co-workers.

Pessimism, by the same token, has a nasty way of infecting everyone in a particular
group with negativity if it is allowed to do so. By looking on the bright side, you can
drive away a depressing atmosphere and help create a more hopeful one.

So now we know that the first step toward eliminating worry from our lives is to
believe we can and the second step is to think positive. The next logical step is to
visualise your worries beginning to disappear.

Picture your mind being emptied of all your stressors. You should try to do this each
night before you go to bed to get the best results. This will enable you to wake up in
the morning with no worries left over from the day before. You’ll be ready to start the
day fresh and worry-free. The worksheets following this chapter will guide you
through the visualisation process in greater detail
