SUBTRACTION OF MONEY
We subtract money figures in the same way as we subtract ordinary numbers.
We just have to place them in vertical columns of rupees (`) and paise (p),
respectively, taking care of the point. While subtracting two amounts, the larger
amount is written first in the columns. Place the decimal point in the answer
leaving two digits from the right.
Subtract ` 18.96 from ` 20.00
Step 1. Subtract paise. We cannot subtract 96 from 0, so regroup.
` p
1 9 100 Take ` 1 = 100 p from the rupees column to the paise
2 0 . 0 0 column leaving behind ` 19. Now, in the paise column,
4
– 1 8 . 9 6 we have 0 + 100 = 100 – 96 = 0 p.
4
1 . 0 4 Write 0 in the paise column.
Step 2. Subtract the rupees. ` 19 – ` 18 = ` 1
Write 1 in the rupees column.
4
Thus, ` 20.00 – ` 18.96 is ` 1.0 .
7 Find the difference.
(a) ` p (b) ` p (c) ` p (d) ` p
1 7 . 8 5 1 2 . 6 0 3 0 . 8 5 6 0 . 0 0

– 1 5 . 3 – 8 . 7 5 – 2 . 9 0 – 3 5 . 9 5
(e) ` p (f) ` p (g) ` p (h) ` p
1 0 0 . 0 0 1 0 1 . 1 0 4 8 . 7 9 2 5 . 0 5
– 9 0 . 9 9 – 9 0 . 9 0 – 2 5 . 8 4 – 1 9 . 0 9
8 Write the amount in columns and subtract.
4
(a) ` 9.95 from ` 16.90 (b) ` 9.99 from ` 50.00
(c) ` 18.96 from ` 30.05 (d) ` 2.25 from ` 3.00
(e) ` 19.00 from ` 27.05 (f) ` 69.10 from ` 100.00
