Q11: In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me
about my progress.
Our overall mean was 3.57 with 59% of us answering our level of agreement
as a 4 or above, using a five-point scale, where 5 means strongly agree and
1 means strongly disagree with that statement.
The County’s HR team is working on making tools more widely available to
supervisors and managers to aid them in having development discussions
with staff. A new performance evaluation system several offices are piloting places greater emphasis
on looking at work plans and goals ahead and ensuring employees develop to meet those.
Why is it important...
Teams in Gallup’s top quartile on this item experience 10% to 15% higher
productivity and 20% to 40% fewer accidents than bottom-quartile teams. There
are few things more important to an employee than knowing that she is progressing
at work. Feedback is vital and beneficial to both an employer and an employee.
Honest, positive and constructive performance feedback provides time to discuss
an employee’s progress and growth. Feedback can help employees understand
themselves better and give them a clear perspective on how their contributions
make a difference to the organization.
Q12: This last year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and
grow.
Our overall mean was 3.88 with 69% of us answering our level of
agreement as a 4 or above, using a five-point scale, where 5 means
strongly agree and 1 means strongly disagree with that statement.
Why is it important...
Employees who have an opportunity to learn and grow at work are twice as likely
as those on the other end of the scale to say they will spend their career with their
company. Only about 50% of Americans agree that they have had opportunities to
learn and grow at work in the past year. When employees feel they are learning and
growing, they work harder and more efficiently.
