Quantitative Data Analysis
                                              Simply Explained Using SPSS

                                         Glossary

Alpha: The probability of a Type I error. It represents the threshold
               for claiming statistical significance.

Alternative hypothesis: The hypothesis that the researcher expects
               to support.

ANCOVA: Same as ANOVA, but adds control of one or more
covariates that may influence the DV.

ANOVA: Tests the significance of group differences between two or
               more groups.

Bar graph: A graph that uses vertical bars to represent the data

Box-plot: Summary plot based on the median, quartiles, and
extreme values. The box represents the inter-quartile range which
               contains the 50% of values.

Categorical Variables: variables such as gender with limited values.
They can be further categorized into NOMINAL (naming variables
where one category is no better than another e.g. hair color) and
ORDINAL, (where there is some order to the categories e.g. 1st, 2nd,
               3rd etc).

Chi-Square: Compares observed frequencies to expected
               frequencies.
