P. 12
Incorporate smart technologies, digital tools, and data analytics into city services
The Internet has already brought hundreds of millions of people together and
created connections that were never before possible -- but this is just the
beginning. The Internet of Things (IoT) is coming, and life as we know it will be
transformed.
The City of Marion is already using some of this technology like our traffic
signals, water meters, built with sensors that enable them to capture and
exchange data, the large set of data generated by these devices can then be
quickly analyzed using digital tools. Data analytics can enable departments to
flag operating issues in real time, predict future usage patterns for public
services and even anticipate equipment failures before they happen. The City of
Marion IT Department will strive to provide efficient, proactive services to our
council and community.
Key Strategies:
• As old technology is replaced, we will work with departments to see if
a smart deployment is an option
• Encourage and assist departments with proper data collection and
storage.
• Work with ExteNet infrastructure for fiber connectivity
Smart City
A Smart city is an urban area that uses different
types of electronic Internet of Things sensors to
collect data and then use insights gained from
that data to manage assets, resources and
services efficiently. Wikipedia City of Marion 12
