Hydrogen gas has several important characteristics that make it useful for many applications. It has
the lowest density of known elements, which makes it practical to compress or liquefy. In addition,
the low density makes hydrogen a better application where friction losses can occur. Hydrogen’s
high heat capacity, coupled with having the highest thermal conductivity of all gases, makes it an
effective gas for heat transfer applications. Hydrogen is a reducing agent(scavenges free oxygen
preventing it from corroding materials), making it a perfect getter gas for applications where
oxidation is undesired.

Typical Applications

1. Metal Processing
There are many metals processes that require the use
of hydrogen in their manufacture. Annealing is a heat
treatment that alters a materials strength, hardness and
ductility. Our generation systems are an efficient and
reliable means to provide hydrogen for metal processing
applications including shaping, stamping, forming,
hydroforming, bending, machining, casting, sintering and
forging. Hydrogen is also used to prevent oxidation in
these processes, as well as in coating processes of many
metals.

2. Power Plant Cooling
Hydrogen is used to cool the windings of large power
plant generators because of its properties, namely low
density, high heat capacity and the highest thermal
conductivity of all gases. Power plants utilizing hydrogen
cooled generators must maintain optimal hydrogen
purity and pressure in the generator casing for
efficiency, safety and equipment reliability.
