Supervision Training and Competence
Supervisors will make sure that suitable supervision is provided where required.
The level of supervision is determined by the risk assessment for the activity factoring
the competency of the operative and the risks involved.
Supervision can only be carried out by someone who themselves are deemed
competent to carry out the task and can explain to an operative all the hazards
involved in the activity.
The site supervisor will be expected to carry out regular safety walks to monitor that
the safety controls are adequate, effective and operatives are working to their method
statement.
When a new operative attends a KpH site they are required to prove they have met the
minimum training standard by supplying a copy of their training during the pre-
registration process (on-boarding) and receiving a URN number.
Although a URN means the operative has met the minimum standard, until assessed
they cannot be deemed competent. Training alone is not sufficient to prove
competency, it is a consolidation of knowledge and skills through practise.
Assessing if an operative is competent can only be carried out by someone who
themselves understands fully the hazards involved with the activity. For this reason
only supervisors and above can observe or ask questions to prove competency of
another.
