The prolonged effects of physical distancing, along with being disconnected from critical
social support and normal everyday life, have already taken a toll on our mental health and
safety. This has triggered alarming levels of reported trauma, substance abuse and relapse,
psychological issues and increased cries for help.
The incidence of mental illness increases when there are traumatic events in life. But, unlike
many other stressful events, this one is ongoing and open-ended. There is no end point to it.
The longer the pandemic continues the more likely that stress will build up over time -
creating a perfect storm for negative emotional, mental and behavioral reactions from any one
of us.
