WHY THIS GIFT MATTERS!
Returning to home villages during residential school breaks can be a dangerous
situation for young students in northern Tanzania. Traditional Maasai customs mean
that girls and young women are vulnerable to early or forced marriages and pregnancy.
Eripoto - the name means “security” - is a Tanzanian nonprofit created by Esuvat
Hedson to help young students overcome barriers she experienced personally. Eripoto
provides support, serving as a safe house for girls during school breaks and a
residence for young women with children during the school year.
Eripoto representatives counsel students at government schools about the importance
of education and suggest strategies that can help them avoid forced marriage and
pregnancy. Seminars encourage parents to make education available to their
daughters.
Eripoto’s sewing and tailoring lessons empower young mothers, offering a way to
support their families.
Sales of hand-beaded earrings, bracelets, key chains and fabric items help pay their
school fees and living expenses.
