rust and scale and spot prime with Nationwide 561 Acrylic Metal Prime. Prime all
unpainted galvanized metal with Nationwide 561 Acrylic Metal Prime.
After washing the surfaces, the area must be carefully examined for cracking,
blistering, peeling, or flaking of the existing paint. All loose, unsound, or non-
adhering paint must be removed. All Thick edges of the remaining paint shall be
feather edged, filled as necessary, and then dusted. Spot prime all patched
areas with Nationwide 561 Acrylic Metal Prime.
Degloss all glossy areas and previously enameled surfaces to provide a
roughened surface or “tooth” for good adhesion of subsequent coats.
All galvanized metal, either bright or dull, should be carefully evaluated to
determine the proper field surface treatment and priming procedures. Large
areas should not be treated and primed until small test areas are checked for
adhesion.
Notes:
EFFLORESCENCE: This condition, which may appear on cementitious or plaster
surface, is caused by moisture entering or contained in the substrate. Water-
soluble salts in the masonry are brought to the surface where the water
evaporated, leaving white residue salt deposits. Defects that cause this problem
must be corrected before any painting is attempted. Check the specifying source
and the owner’s agent to verify that the surfaces are ready for painting. Once the
above conditions have been repaired, remove all deposits by wire brushing and
acid etching with phosphoric acid. Rinse all surfaces with clear water to remove
any remaining residue.
MILDEW: To remove mildew, if not metering a solution in the power wash, scrub
affected areas with following solution:
rd
Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) 2/3 cup
Household Bleach (Clorox) 1 Quart
rd
Powdered Detergent 1/3 cup
Add warm water to make 1 gallon
Or use a commercially available mildewcide. Rinse all surfaces with clear clean
water to remove any remaining residue. Subsequent treatments may be required
due to the severity of mildew. Allow the surfaces to thoroughly dry as per the
note below pertaining to moisture before proceeding with preparation or painting.
Caution: Bleach may be harmful to eyes, clothing, and surrounding vegetation,
so take all precautions to ensure safety.
