FMD
The FMD outbreak in Limpopo started in November 2019 and 19 locations
tested positive for FMD. The last positive location was reported to the World
Organisation for Animal Health (also known as OIE) on 26 February 2020 and
no new positive locations have been identified since. On most of the affected
locations, more than 6 months have passed since the last clinical cases, which
is a very encouraging sign that the outbreak was successfully controlled.
ASF
Last reported case of ASF in the EC was in early August were 7 dead pigs were
reported. Due to this the EC outbreak remains “unresolved”.
The Mpumalanga and NC outbreaks from 2019 are also still listed with the OIE
as “continuing”.
All outbreaks prior to 2019 have been “resolved”.
Unless provincial /national strategies to allow and encourage culling with
compensation the Mpumalanga ASF cases will continue to simmer.
SAPPO continues with assisting to drive ASF awareness via leaflets and digital
media. Successful campaigns on regional radio stations were organised, this
included an interview with Dr Maja on Lesedi FM in June.
Import of pork from Germany has been restricted since outbreak of ASF in that
country.
CSF & PRRS
No new cases have been reported.
Raw Pork Imports from PRRS Positive Countries
No developments or changes since last meeting
Pork Exports
China has responded on SA’s application to be allowed to export to them, in
the negative. Apparently, imports are banned from all countries infected with
ASF. They seem to be consistent in their approach as have recently banned
German imports. Our only hope of exporting to china is if they accept the
safeguards provided by Pig compartments.
