choice, they are not and will not accept a blanket one size fits all approach – nor should they.
Synovum Care Bellmere will offer freedom of movement, a safe and family environment and
individualised services that are underpinned by a wellness and empowerment approach. The
National Wellness Institute define wellness as “an active process through which people
become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence”.
Every design element, as we have gone through the design process, has been assessed against
our vision ‘… normal a life as possible’, if it is not normal in your life before you enter care
then it is not part of Synovum Care Bellmere. Unless of course there is a specific safety
requirement. There are three main design components to Synovum Care Bellmere;
1. Small Scale Houses; which are domestic style homes designed as a
familiar environment to those residents who move in. Detailed
further in this document under the heading Australian Lifestyles
2. Outdoors; so a wider community which is ‘active’ and easily
accessible for residents. This is made up of ‘normal’ street scapes,
parks, a town centre and gardens. The outdoor component will
account for at least 50% of the design.
3. Technology; through the use of the most advanced technologies,
such as movement sensors, we offer safety as well as independence to our community.
Small Scale Houses
• Domestic size / style houses which are fully functional
• Single story
• 17 houses in total – 16 of which have 7 people living in each house,
1 with 8 people
• Each house, from the façade, interior design and fixtures, fittings
and furnishings, will be designed to suit those residents who will
be living in that house. The house designs are underpinned by the
‘Australian Lifestyle Archetypes’, detailed under Australian
Lifestyles on page
• Kitchen, laundry and the outdoors are fully accessible to everyone
living in each house to encourage participation in daily living
activities and maintain independence
• Each house has hidden features which ensure we can care for
residents with the highest of needs as their care needs change - the features are
hidden to ensure the house remains a home and not a clinical environment
• Each house also has their own private back and front yard with a low line fence, gate
and mailbox just like in a normal community
