Company Car Drivers Bulletin 2022 – Edition Five
October is Tyre Safety month, spearheaded by TyreSafe. Please check out their
website https://www.tyresafe.org/campaigns/tyre-safety-month/
The key message is that correctly inflated tyres with sufficient tread are vital to the
safe operation of the car. Under inflated tyres with low tread cause longer stopping
distances. Please check your tyres on a regular basis – remember the 20p coin check

Winter is coming! Ensure you are prepared for driving in colder and darker
conditions. This could include having a winter pack in the boot (blankets, hi vis
jacket). Ensure you have good visibility (top up screenwash regularly, clean your
headlights regularly as they will collect dirt from the road). Check the tread on
your tyres is above 2mm. Crucially make sure you know what to do if things go
wrong (Phone numbers for breakdowns and reporting an accident)
Dehydration Driving whilst thirsty does affect your concentration, and
increases the risk of being involved in an incident. The impact of
dehydration is very similar to that of alcohol and drugs and increases the
risk of making mistakes whilst driving. You should be planning a stop for
every 2 hours of driving. Whilst water is most effective at rehydrating, a
cup of tea, coffee or a soft drink are equally effective in reducing the risk
of dehydrated driving
Higher Fuel Costs The cost of fuel has reduced recently but it is likely to
constantly fluctuate due to energy crisis. The best way to manage your
fuel costs is drive economically. The main cause of higher fuel
consumption is speeding and the related heavy braking. Driving at 80mph
uses 10% more fuel than at 70mph.
Poorly inflated tyres are the other major cost of higher fuel consumption
