NON-VERBAL CLUES
Non-verbal communication is normally managed unconsciously by the autonomic system
and accounts for over 60 per cent of the messages conveyed between humans and 10 per cent
between accountants. It dates back to over 500 million years ago before language evolved and
was the only way that our ancestors could communicate. It is still highly relevant.
The body language of children is usually obvious, such as placing hands over their mouths,
ears and eyes when they do, say, hear or see something naughty. As we get older, these childish
movements are refined and substituted by disguised actions, such as false scratching, yawns
etc. but they have the same objective of covering the mouth.
Non-verbal clues are especially important in assessing whether an emotion is genuine or not.
