She breaks up the circle and tells the students to list five words describing a scientist and to try to draw a picture as well. Giving some thought to the assignment, they list words such as discoverer, chemistry expert, exceptional, hardworking and Mad Max, after the movie hero. The news that they will probably get to do an experiment in their next class clearly excites the young scientists as the room buzzes with talk after Harding%u2019s announcement.A VEXING PROBLEMBack in Johnson%u2019s class, the students are discussing some logic problems that few high school students ever have the opportunity to talk out. On the chalkboard, Johnson has written a difficult problem:%u201cOn a strange island a guard asks every visitor, %u2018Why are you coming here?%u2019 If the visitor answers truly, all is well. If he answers falsely, he is hanged. One day a visitor came to the island and answers, %u2018I came to be hanged.%u2019%u201d Johnson asks the youngsters, %u201cWhat happens? This is just a warm-up for you.%u201dAfter much discussion with the students slowly trying to work out the answer, Johnson says, %u201c Is this solveable?%u201d One girl says, %u201cIt%u2019s something that starts with a P ... It%u2019s a paradox.%u201d%u201cIdentify the problem. You%u2019re the guard, what do you do? Do you string the visitor up?%u201d Johnson says to the class. Agonizing over how to answer the question, the students try in vain to identify the problem with the words and description Johnson wants to hear.No one is successful. %u201cEverything is leap to conclusions with you kids. Just be quiet for a few minutes and try to figure out the problem,%u201d coaxes Johnson. Finally, a young girl slowly talks out the situation and says that the problem is that the guard, who is obeying orders, does not know what to do. %u201cIf the visitor answers truly, he will not get hanged, which is what he wants. If he answers falsely, he is hanged.%u201dIt is a day%u2019s excitement, or education, at The Science Skills Center. There are still some places available.
