In the course of time, the students had studied duck weed up close, peered in a glass of marsh water with plant life, watched the timid behavior of the geese feeding at the lake, and kept and ever watchful eye out for fish, elusive in the dark, cold waters. And as the group turned back to the picnic house from where they had started, it was with some reluctance. They lingered back looking for yet more fish. For more information on the programs available through the Prospect Park Environmental Center or to make reservations, call 788-8500.French Students VisitPark Slope will soon be the temporary home of 21 French students who will be spending three weeks with neighborhood families while studying English and learning about American culture at the BerkeleyCarroll School. The students, aged 14-16, will be arriving Oct. 23 and are part of the initial exchange program that is being started between their school, College Louis Lumir, in Marly-leRoi, near Paris, and the Park Slope private school. In April of this school year, 15 BerkeleyCarroll sophomores and juniors will reciprocate with a visit to the French school. Members of the staff at Adelphi Academy, 8515 Ridge Boulevard, said their independent school met those qualifications in Brooklyn. The %u201cAdelphi Plan,%u201d instituted by Dr. Clinton J. Vickers, headmaster, concentrates on mastering the basics of English, history, mathematics and science with a program of personalized tutorial classes averaging eight students to a teacher. Surrounding this core curriculum are classes in music and art, the languages, athletics and communication technology. Hinrichs described the independent school as one that has interaction between students not only in the traditional sense, but also as counselors, coaches and directors in all aspects of school life. The curriculum is faculty determined, and parents play an active role in the governance of the school.%u201cOur goal,%u201d said Vickers, %u201cis to do everything we can to motivate the students to teach them how %u2014 not what %u2014 to think. We challenge them to attain their potential and develop habits of inquiry. The students learn to take responsibility for their own education.%u201d For information on special programs, call 238-3308.Reenact ConstitutionAs part of the celebration marking the bicentennial of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, Brooklyn high school students will be able to participate in a reenactment of the Constition Convention and Congressman Charles Schumer has encouraged each local high school to submit one student.Convention II will run from February 3-7 in Washington DC.
