The Blackbirds captured the title with a 3-1 defeat of Alabama A & M and a 2-1 defeat of Cal State/Los Angeles in the tournament hosted by Brooklyn College on Oct. 7 and 8.Roger Chavez, the team%u2019s second leading scorer this season was named the tournament%u2019s Most Valuable Player and proved his soccer skills by scoring three goals for the Blackbirds. Maicol Antelo, Ian Pearson and Chavez made the All-Tournament team.On a similarly successful note, the Blackbirds have been steadily moving up in the rankings. The Blackbirds reached their highest ranking of the season last week, moving into 7th place in the weekly Division I national coaches poll compiled by the Intercollegiate Soccer Association. Their record is currently 10-0-2. In the New York region voting, LIU has retained its first place position and is followed by Hartwick and Syracuse, which it displaced earlier in the season.In the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Blackbirds currently hold a record of 3-0-1, chalking up two more wins when they defeated Monmouth on Oct. 16 with a score of 3-1 and on Oct. 17 defeated St. Francis 2-0. St. Francis had previously been undefeated and the Blackbird%u2019s win put them ahead in the conference. This year%u2019s race is being sponsored in cooperation with the Sunset Park Runners Club.Schaefer says all entry fees from the race are to be donated to LMC%u2019s pediatric service. Four to five hundred runners are expected to participate in this year%u2019s event. Karen Voight, the %u201csoft aerobics%u201d expert from Los Angeles who models on two best-selling posters, will be giving a full day of master classes and workshops, between 9am and 5pm.The gymnasium at the Heights club will contain 150 aerobics and exercise instructors from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, Florida, Illinois, Rhode Island, Virginia, and the tri-state metropolitan area. The crowd is inaugurating a series of superstar exercise experts invited to present master classes at the St. George.%u201cThe St. George is committed to high quality, variety and professionalism in its exercise programs,%u201d says Marisa Duffy of the club. Nearly all its full-time aerobics isntructors are certified by Aerobics Fitness Federation of America or International Dance and Exercise Association. Staff are encouraged to attend professional meetings where they work with leaders in the industry.
