The show is young %u2014 it%u2019s cast young and I tried every way I could to relate it to young people. I want to reach people who still have the vitality to change themselves and work to change their world. The realism that was motivating for me can be immobilizing for younger generations. The changed ending doesn%u2019t betray the %u2018docu%u2019 part of the work, and it may prove more enabling for people to go out and do something about their lives and the evils that confront them. In this case it%u2019s the Klan and white supremacists, but it could be politicians or polluters; it%u2019s the idea we%u2019re getting at, that some people are better than others, some lives expendable for the gain of others,%u201d she said. This commitment has led the duo to begin a new work. Titled %u201cThe Match%u201d for now, this show will deal with one of the only issues more devastating than racism and political violence %u2014 child abuse. Just as %u201cBang Bang%u201d thrust Torf from backing singer Holly Near into the heat of creating unprecedented musical theater, and put Jordan%u2019s precious personal poetry at the mercy of actors and singers, the two will no doubt continue to stretch each other to new creations. Torf is going into the studio in November to record her first solo album. Jordan, while teaching at the State University at Stonybrook, L.I., is expanding the vocabulary of her many acclaimed books of poetry and commentary to tackle environmental issues.BROOKLYN CULTURAL HEROBoth artists have strong feelings about being a part of Brooklyn%u2019s culture and about Burl Hash, who put together the music series for Celebrate Brooklyn that %u201cshould be the envy of any other arts institution in New York,%u201d according to Torf.%u201cBurl is a sort of cultural hero. He%u2019s dedicated to Brooklyn artists as well as the validity of first-class arts and culture here. Look at this series: you have work that%u2019s on the cutting edge, work of the highest artistic value that strongly reflects and serves both the sophisticated arts community and the deeply-rooted ethnic cultures that are uniquely Brooklyn%u2019s. Look at the Brooklyn Academy of Music %u2014 they bus people in from Manhattan and bus them back, and then the people say %u2018what a lovely eveningIt's no accident that W hitm ancam e to m atu rity as A m erica'sgreatest p o e t in Brooklyn. Hisvision o f o u r co untry wasspawned her, because therehave always been ethnic groups.we had in Brooklyn.%u2019 That%u2019s a very different vision,%u201d Torf concludes.%u201cTo me,%u201d Jordan adds, %u201cBrooklyn is democratic America, and Burl is making that statement culturally. It%u2019s no accident that Walt Whitman came to maturity as America%u2019s greatest poet in Brooklyn. His vision of our country was spawned here. Because here there have always been ethnic groups maintaining a strong identity while getting accustomed to and accepting each other, unlike the ghettoized situation in Manhattan. It%u2019s really happening here and Burl is a hero of Brooklyn%u2019s democratic vision of the arts.%u201d%u201cI need Brooklyn,%u201d she concludes. I moved back here from Stonybrook and now I drive almost two hours each way. I had to be here.%u201d%u201cBang Bang Uber Alles%u201d Is being performed Sunday, October 19 at 3pm, in the Prospect Park Picnic House, Prospect Park West and 5th St. Tickets are $5; free with TDF vouchers, children under 12, $2.50.
