Unwanted Events
As a starting point, a historical review of the global
data on all fatalities at Holcim was performed.
During the exercise, close attention was also given to
catastrophic / multi-fatality events and factored into

The data revealed that 85% of fatalities at Holcim
related to just 8 ‘Unwanted Events’. These events
were: Contact with Moving Machinery, Mobile
Equipment Incidents, Material Engulfment, Fall from
Height, Structural Collapse, Coal Mill Explosion,
Liquid Fuel Fire, and Hot Meal Contact - the Fatal

These became the ‘Priority Unwanted Events’
(P.U.E.s) and the starting point for the global journey

The selection of P.U.E.s was only the first step in this
broader overall approach to managing critical risks.
