First Annual Convention 51

ing to prepare a suitable resolution to be adopted tomorrow. If
the Machinery Committee want me to do so I will put it in the
shape of a motion. I will make that motion now, that a commit
tee of five, including the Machinery Committee, present a resolu
tion to this Association tomorrow morning.
                        M r. P r e n t i s s : I second that motion.
The motion being duly seconded was unanimously carried.

                        P r e sid e n t S t r o n g : Shall the Chair appoint the Committee?
                        A M e m b e r : That is usual.

                        P r e sid e n t S t r o n g : The old Committee consists of Mr.
Brown, Mr. Prentiss and Mr. Babcock. Mr. Babcock is absent.
Mr. Marshall, Mr. Clarke and Mr. W . M. Pattison.
The matter of machines sold for less than $100 being sold
at less than twenty per cent is under investigation, and it has been
suggested that that be referred to the same Committee of five.
If there is any objection we will be glad to hear suggestions.

                        A M e m b e r : I would like to know what effect this resolu
tion would have on parties outside of the Association.
                        P r e sid e n t S trong : There are lots outside. We can judge
what the effect will be. It will not bind them in any way.
Do you want to continue the discussion of the Machinery
Committee’s report? If not we will take up the Secretarv-Treas-
                   urer’s report.

                           R EPO RT O F J. H. D RU RY, Secretary-Treasurer.

                         M r. D r u r y : In taking up the work of the Association,
which has been done by continued correspondence and personal
solicitation, I found manufacturers of supplies somewhat divided.
Some were interested in our proposition, others were indifferent.
A few said, “It cannot be done; your dealers will not hold to
                   prices.”
By constant application, we induced some manufacturers to
consent to make the attempt. Their first difficulty was the un
willingness of their competitors to agree with them as to price.
1 lien we were obliged to work on the competitors, and in time
