80 The Xational Supply and Machinery Dealers’ Association
lie has a lot of New England directors who have to be shown
very plainly that anything that is done will not interfere with the
Morse Twist Drill Company. I believe Mr. Cushman is more
favorably disposed towards something of this kind than ever
                        before.

                             M r. Bo n d: Does the re-sale price contemplate anything
in the price of quantity sales? I have one item where there is a
price on one gross lots, and two gross lots.
                              P resident S t ro n g: I don't know whether it would apply
to all lines. In some lines it is expected the price to the consumer
would depend on the amount he buys. The man who buys one
gross of hack saws would not get as good a price as the one who
buys four gross or as the one who buys ten gross.

                              M r. B o n d : Is it policy to talk over the matter of shafting?
It is something we find nasty to handle, and by the time we haul
it and sell it, there is not much profit.
                             M r. Y o s t: The committee of the Shafting Association
called on a few of us and asked us to meet them. There were
a number of companies represented, and their object was, it seemed,
to go around from one city to another getting the concerns hand
ling shafting together, asking them to form a local Association
on shafting, and asking them to maintain the manufacturer’s
                        ] trice.
The answer we made was that it was entirely up to them to
                        force the maintenance of prices.
In our city we have two local manufacturers who are not
members of the Shafting Association. Sixty miles from us we
have another manufacturer who is not a member. We told these
gentlemen that it was up to them to get these parties in line to
maintain the price, and then they would have no trouble in getting
the dealers. I understand that they have done it in Philadelphia,
and they went from Cleveland to Ruffalo.
We told them if they would get everybody in line, then, come
to the dealers and say that everybody was a member of the
Shafting Association, that they could quickly force us to maintain
their prices, and we demanded that they force us to do so.
