102 The Yatitmal Supply and Machinery Dealers’ Association

to me on the selling end, if the Association is going to do anything,
it ought to regulate the cash discount to the consumer, because
the parties are in competition one with another.
M r. B rion : On that point you want to take into considera
tion that you are asking the manufacturers to sell at a certain price,
and you want to know what cash discount they will give. It is a
vital point in agreeing on the subject. W e think great results can
be accomplished from notifying the members to write people you
wish to reach, like the set and cap screw people. You write to them,
and by getting the same thought from so many different sources
they get at what we are after. If you all write to the manufacturers
on the same subject they say ‘‘There is something in it,” and they
                       look into it.
1 thought there might be a division at this time. The
machine tool people are asking a discount. The supply people
arc asking for a price which will allow them more discount. I
think the machine tool people would not consent to allow two per
cent discount. With the supply people it might be brought about.
I think if the Executive Committee will take that matter up it will
                       be allowed.

A M em ber : The reason why two per cent has been abused so
is because there has been no universal action and no combined
action among dealers and manufacturers. One man will allow two
per cent thirty days because his competitor does, and so on. If
there was uniform action, and all requested it, there would not be
                       this abuse.
I think to take up this question at the present time is trying
to do too much at one meeting. I think if the Executive Committee
sees fit to take it up with some of the supply men it will be well
to leave it with them. Let this discount go until we get our
twelve and a half per cent settled.

M r. B rio n : I make the motion that the Secretary of the
Association be instructed to ascertain the names of the various
manufacturers of supplies that will favor giving this Association
a two per cent cash discount on goods paid for the 10th of the
                       month following the purchase.
