P re s id e n t S t r o n g : You have heard the motion. I? there
anv furth.er discussion f
M r. B r a d l e y : I think some manufacturers would think it
unmitigated gall if we asked for that. It is equivalent to asking
the manufacturer to show up every thing he is selling. If a man
can get two per cent he is in luck.
As this discussion has gone on. it has impressed me that we
are getting into a sort of fraternal relation with these affairs that
is going to occup'- a good deal of time and not lead anywhere.
For the Convention to formulate plans in buying and selling is all
right, but to go into any concerted action seems to be out of place.
M r. S c o t t : I offer a substitute for that resolution. “It is
the sense of this Association to abolish, the cash discount, and
recommend to the Executive Committee that they do what in their
judgment and ability they can towards abolishing the cash
discount, and leave it to them.’’
It seems to me a matter that the Board can handle and that
we cannot handle in this meeting. Correspondence will have to
be iiad with the manufacturers. I believe it a matter to go to the
Executive Committee.
M r. B rio x : If my motion is not seconded I withdraw it.
Mu. S 111 rt.ivV: The machine tool people will sav “vour
Association has voted to withdraw it, and we will not give it to
you any more.” I think it will re-act on us.
M r. C o lc o r d : If we want to get a cash discount from the
manufacturer, and refuse to give it to the consumer, I think the
manufacturer will bring it up. The first thing that occurs to me
is that we do agree 011 uniform individual action in regard to cash
discount to the consumer. That is that we will individually return
checks taking the two per cent discount after ten days, according
to the rule of the concern. For our part we have our bills stamped
“ Xct cash due from the date of the bill,” and we return checks
if there is any discount taken. It might not do in all sections to
take such drastic action.
It seems to me to bo the sense to lay this matter 011 the table,
and for each individual for the present year to act separately, but
in a uniform manner. I make that as a motion.
