Cucumbers and beets: Garden Space Savers
Cucumbers and beets
Garden Space Savers
Look up, look way up…! Yes, vertical gardens are fun, yield lots of vegetables,
and are incredible space savers when needed.
Cucumbers are a wonderful summer crop that are mouth-watering
delicious when picked fresh.
You’ll need a climbing structure – pergoda, trellis, or archway – if you’ll
be planting out in the garden or in a raised bed, or a wigwam structure
if you plant cucumbers in containers. Whatever you choose, you’ll
need a sunny location where wind will not be an issue. Soil should be
deep, loose and well-drained. Vertical bonus: yields are often greater
than in traditional horizontal gardens.
If you think only vines can be adapted to vertical gardens,
think again! Root vegetables can also thrive. Beets are an excellent
choice, because both the leaves and the beet root can be eaten.
Containers or ‘pockets’ in a vertical planter should be at least
10 in. deep, filled with loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Six hours
of sunlight a day will make your beet plants very happy!
