food every day. All of these are extremely important to the functioning of
our bodies, yet they don’t provide fuel. So, it’s important to remember that
food is more than just fuel. But let’s chat more about why food is more than
just fuel.
Have you ever been in a situation where you increased your calories
and lost weight or decreased your calories and gained weight? That’s
because we, as people, are not perfectly operating robots. Calorie math
doesn’t always work out. Not only that, but what we eat isn’t always
what we absorb or use, so a calorie outside the body isn’t always a calorie
inside the body. Why? Because, we are not machines.
Another important reason is that you’re not actually human either.
No, just kidding. You are human, but your body isn’t completely human.
We have trillions of microbiome critters living in and on us. Changing our
gut microbiome changes our digestion, absorption, body composition and
health, so it’s kind of a big deal.
So, if food is more than just fuel, what the heck is food? Food is
information. Food tells our body to release a certain hormone or express a
protein or prevent expressions of hormones and proteins. Every single thing
that you eat has a message for the body that we can’t really see. We just eat,
chew and swallow and somehow our body transforms all of that into
everything our body is made of and how it functions. It’s pretty neat, eh?
Food is even more than that, it’s part of a story about us too. We
relate to food in many ways because it helps communicate who we are.
Maybe you’re a savvy consumer and always going to “locally grown”
markets to support your community. Maybe you consider yourself a
