mirror and you can say that you already eat really healthy, the best next step
is to ask yourself, how is that working for you? Asking yourself that
forces you to look at your outcome. This strategy is also helpful if you
feel you already eat very well and are being resistant to change. If you are
eating healthy, you shouldn’t have any factors associated with too much or
too little energy intake nor be experiencing performance loss, nutrient
deficiencies or generally feeling unwell.
Good nutrition is also sustainable for both us and the planet. If you
are eating in a way that isn’t sustainable for long term, crash dieting or
major restrictions, then something needs to change. Sustainable eating is not
a quick fix or a diet, it’s a lifestyle. Vice versa, if the way you are eating
isn’t sustainable to our planet; picture billions of us doing the same and what
that means for the future of our food supply, it’s quite a thought experiment.
When we talk about environmental impact, we’re talking about sustainable
agriculture, which involves preserving and replenishing the soil with
nutrients, preserving and replenishing the water reserves, growing a
wide range of diverse crops, making the best of valuable farmland, good
animal welfare, understanding interactions of organisms and ecosystems
rather than factories, ensuring people are treated fairly and safe, good food
safety, proper public health, and minimizing waste and pollution. For us,
sustainability might be related to what’s convenient, what food costs, what’s
available or what tastes good. As your coach, it’s my job to help you figure
out what sustainability means to you and to help you achieve that
sustainability. This can be challenging, but it’s a key part of the puzzle if
you want to have long-term change.
Good nutrition is also about removing limiting factors. You will
most likely have at least one limiting factor, so be on alert.
