– 1812 – Maria Burada, the first woman in Moldavia to translate plays (d.
1886)
– 1879, 15/28: Linguist Theodor Capidan was born; he established himself
through the great linguistic, ethnographic and folkloric monographs on the
Romanian dialects of the South Danube (Megleno-Romanian and Macedonian-
Romanian); together with Constantin Lacea, he was the most devoted
collaborator of Sextil Puşcariu in the elaboration of the "Dictionary of the
Romanian Language"; full member of the Romanian Academy since 1935 (d.
1953) – 145 years old
– 1905: Aurel Decei, historian, orientalist, diplomat and journalist, was born;
specialist in the history of the Romanian Middle Ages (d. 1976)
– 1905, 15/28: Agronomist and agrotechnician Irimie Staicu was born; studied
the methods of fertilization of podzols and salts; corresponding member of the
Romanian Academy since 1963 (d. 1989). NOTE: Some sources mention the
date of birth exclusively in the New Style – April 28, 1905
– 1913: The composer, pianist and teacher Rodica Lucia Suţu was born; sound
master at the Romanian Radio Broadcasting (1937-1955) (d. 1979)
– 1921: Constantin Barozzi, general, geodesist and cartographer, died;
founding member of the Romanian Geographical Society; honorary member of
the Romanian Academy since 1905 (b. 1833)
– 1924 – Stephen (Alexander) Fischer-Galați, American historian and professor
originally from Romania, was born; author and editor of works of primary
importance in the field of Eastern European history; between 1951 and 1953
he worked at the US State Department, and during the Nixon administration
he became a consultant for Eastern European issues to the White House (d.
2014) – 100 years
– 1924 – Eduard Caudella, violinist, pedagogue, composer, conductor and
music critic (b. 1841) died – 100 years old
