– 1934: Ion Vianu, psychiatrist and writer, was born; established in
Switzerland since 1977; after 1989 he was actively involved in the reform of
the psychiatric system in Romania, returning frequently to the country; son of
literary critic Tudor Vianu – 90 years old
– 1935 – Gheorghe Firca, composer, musicologist and publicist (d. 2016)
– 1936: Petre Ivănescu, former handball player and coach, was born; he
played for Dinamo Bucharest, a team with which he won the national
championship 13 times and the European Champions League in 1965; he
played 205 matches for the Romanian national team, with which he won two
World Championships (1961 and 1964); at the 1961 World Cup he was named
top scorer, together with the Czechoslovakian Zdeněk Rada (24 goals) (d.
2022)
– 1939: Agronomist engineer Nicolae N. Săulescu was born; contributions to
the theoretical foundation and experimental creation of wheat varieties; full
member of the Romanian Academy since 2009 – 85 years old
– 1942: Lawyer and politician Lucian Bolcaş was born; he was vice-president
of the PRM, deputy of the Romanian Parliament in the 2000-2004, 2004-2008
legislatures; on September 30, 2010, he joined the PSD (d. 2020)
– 1944: Doctor and professor Laurenţiu Mircea Popescu was born; studies on
myocardial injury caused by cardiac ischemia; discovered telocytes, a type of
human cell with a regenerative role, capable of healing the heart of patients
who have suffered a myocardial infarction; author of a histology atlas; general
director of the "Victor Babeş" National Institute in Bucharest (1993-2015);
rector of the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest
(1992-2004); full member of the Romanian Academy since 2001, president of
the Medical Sciences Section of the Romanian Academy (2006-2014) and
president of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2006-2011) (d. 2015) – 80
years old
