SCCTM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS NOVEMBER 16 - 17, 2023
Thursday Session F58 3:10 - 4:00 Atrium Alcove
Math & Literacy Are Stronger Together
Who doesn’t love a good read-aloud? Stories create a space where students can explore their
mathematical thinking and understanding in unique ways. Children’s literature offers
memorable opportunities to discuss mathematical ideas and connect those ideas to
meaningful contexts. Come to learn and discuss how we use authentic, diverse, engaging
stories to explore and interact with mathematical concepts that you teach in your classroom
every day.
Real learning comes from authentically and purposefully linking a story to important
mathematical concepts. Walk away with a curated list of children’s literature linked with math
skills and concepts that you can use in your classroom(s) tomorrow!

Exploring Math Concepts Hands-On
Manipulatives play a vital role in helping students build conceptual understanding of abstract
math concepts. Participants in this session will use manipulatives to explore some of math’s
most challenging concepts for students in grades 3-5. Join us as we use hand2mind lessons
and resources to bring math alive for all learners.
