Coffee Cups Unknown age. There are three clues to its being old. Three of the saucers are so pale they
barely show, and I don’t think a reproduction artist would do that. Muslin is used instead of softer percale.
And the size is too narrow for a double or queen bed. eBay purchase 2013. 66"x92" Fabric: Cotton calicoes
on muslin. Batting: None. Backing: Muslin. Edge: Knife edge. Piecing: By machine. Quilting: Tied. Condition:
Excellent. Comment: Repeated mundane motifs such as turtles or shoes have been popular and show up in
African American quilts since about the 1940s. The idea is repeated a lot recently. I like this for the cozy
image of coffee cups. The pattern appears in The Pieced Quilt, an American Design Tradition, by Jonathan
Holstein (1973). He dates the design to 1910.
