Appliqued Animals and Shoes 1930s, judging from the shade of green and the use of wood and seashell
buttons. eBay purchase 2012. 33½"x37" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Thick, feels like a blanket. Edge: The back is
brought to the front to create a ¾" border on the sides and a 3½" border top and bottom, and top-stitched
by machine. Piecing: By machine. Appliqués are by hand with irregular blanket stitching on their edges.
Quilting: By machine along seam lines. Condition: Good. Physically very strong, but with three faint age
freckles. Comment: Possibly made by a child rather than a folk artist, but whoever assembled it did have a
sense of design. It bears some resemblance to one of the quilts of Gee’s Bend book by Lucy Pettway, using
alternating dark and light blocks and primitive figures, hers just circles. I like it for its folk-artsy direct
expression.
