               my mom had a
               quilt like that

Hawaiian, Kaomi Mali Pattern Age unknown. eBay purchase in about 1996. 76"x76" Fabric: Cotton muslin.
Batting: Thin. Backing: Cotton muslin. Edge: Separate tape machined to the front then brought to the back
and topstitched by machine, or else stitched from the front very close to the green-and-white seam line,
and caught on the back, with slight wavering in the stitching line. Piecing: Hand appliquéd. Quilting: By
hand in a grid having lines ½" apart, 9-10 stitches per inch. Condition: Excellent. Comment: This quilt was
collected before reproductions were widely available in Hawaii, imported from the Philippines. The pat-
tern appears in "Hawaiian Quilts" by Stella M. Jones, 1989 revision of a 1930 text published by Daughters
of Hawaii, Honolulu academy of arts, and Mission House Museum, at pages 10, 67 and 75. At the time I
bought it, eBay revealed purchasers’ contact information, and I received two offers to buy it, one from Julie
Silber, former curator of the Esprit Amish quilt collection.
