Kohl was a basic remedy for treating eye afflictions. In an 11th-century
letter, found in the Cairo Genizah, Amram Hacohen, the physician from

Ramle, asked Shlomo ben Yehuda from Jerusalem: "I request from
His Honor a small amount of kohl for me to remove the inflammation
