Theriac Saving Souls in Jerusalem

Man has always been subject to the deadly harm of toxic substances found in flora and
fauna. Snake bites, the stings of various arthropods, and ingestion of poisonous plants were
often fatal. Therefore, it was necessary to find antidotes for toxins, known in ancient times
as theriac, the Greek term meaning protection from venom. Jerusalem was known as one
of the important centers in the world for producing theriac serum. Apothecaries produced
the serum from different herbs found in Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. Jerusalem theriac
consisted of, among others: the venom of asps and scorpions, minerals and various wild
plants, asphalt, kickxia, and wild carrot.
