Then rotate back to the third strand, which goes under and over the strand previous to
(toward the standing part) the one under which you tucked the first strand. After that it’s a
matter of weaving the ends alternately over and under strands as you work your way up the
rope (step 4).
If you mess up, it will be evident; the splice will lose its nice, round look. Just pull out a
few strands, backing up, and start again. It’s easier than it sounds.

When you’re all done, rolling the splice on a hard floor under your shoe gives it a finished
touch. The splice is amazingly strong after the unraveled strands have been tucked four or
five times. With natural fiber rope, four tucks of each strand are probably plenty. Synthetic
