CONDITIONS OF OPERATORS
Mental States
Mental States refer to psychological/mental conditions that may
negatively affect performance, such as mental fatigue,
pernicious attitudes and misplaced motivation, and cognitive
states such as distraction, mental workload and confusion.
● Cognitive factors - attention/memory failures, confusion,
inaccurate expectations
● Motivation/arousal - complacency, haste, overconfidence,
boredom, frustration, drowsiness
Physiological states
Physiological state individual's medical physiological conditions
that may preclude safe operations, such as illness, intoxication
and the myriad of pharmacological and medical abnormalities
known to affect performance.
● Physiological factors - illness, dehydration, hypoglycemia,
circadian dysrhythmia
● Physical factors - muscle fatigue, inadequate stature,
strength or dexterity
Physical/Mental Limitations
Physical/Mental Limitations are physical/mental characteristics of
the individual that may adversely impact performance, such as
poor vision, lack of physical strength, mental aptitude and general
knowledge, and a variety of other chronic illnesses.
● Physical limitations - obesity, injury, disability, sensory
deficits
● Mental limitations - lack of experience, knowledge or
aptitude
