He was injured, but seemed to be okay. He was
taken over to a truck where his wife and child waited to
comfort him.
I was in total shock and in disbelief. Thoughts were
rushing through my head. It all happened so fast. Did
that moko man, affect that explosion with his fierce
voice and actions? Was I hallucinating, or had I just
witnessed a miracle?
Pita walked over and expressed his gratitude. He
obviously had a great respect for this moko man, who I
later found out was named Tu-Manawanui - Tu for
short. As I stood there still pretty numb from what had
just happened, Pita walked over to me and again started
acting like his usual, jerky self.
He began questioning me. Why was I there? Then
he reprimanded me for taking a job away from someone
who wasn’t able to feed their family.
Well, I had, had enough and let him know that my
working for Professor Armstrong on my thesis on
kumara in no way affected any other New Zealander’s
job status. I myself was questioning how on earth he
was there. It wound up he was working for one of his
many cousins who owned the property where the
explosion had just occurred. I asked him to please
never rescue me again, as the abuse wasn’t worth it.
