He replied, “I didn’t rescue you, Tu-Manawanui
did…Tu and the ancestors”.
I mistakenly said, “He just danced the explosion
away?” which of course resulted in another rampage on
how someone like me would never understand.
“Tu is a tohunga, a respected master. He has great
mana (personal power) and is more than capable. Pita
fumed, “You saw him recite a karakia, a prayer for the
injured man. The haka he performed activated the
winds to neutralize the chemicals and to stop the
explosion.”
To save my sanity, I got in my car and drove away
as quickly as I could.
Back at the manor I described the experience to the
Professor, his attorney and the attorney’s wife as we sat
around the fireplace sipping tea. I spoke of the
explosion and of my encounter with Pita and Tu.
The attorney’s wife was somewhat blunt about me
not swallowing that Maori hocus pocus and that I
should be sure to spend more time with my own kind.
Her husband wasn’t any more open-minded and
expounded very bluntly the impossibility of a little song
and dance stopping a chemical reaction.
