2. The first letter of the direct speech is always capital.
3. Comma (,) is put after the reporting verb.
4. The tense of the reporting verb is never changed.
Some points to be remembered about indirect speech :
1. No inverted commas (“.....”) are used in Indirect speech.
2. The inverted commas (“.....”) of the reported speech are removed and a
conjunction is generally used after the reporting verb.
3. All kinds of sentences are changed into assertive ones.
Some important rules of changing narration :
While changing the narration, three changes are the most important.
1. Removal of inverted commas (“.....”).

Rules for changing Direct speech into Indirect speech
While changing Direct speech into Indirect speech, the following rules should be
observed :
Rule 1
Change of Pronoun
· The pronoun of the first person (I, we, my, mine, our, ours, me, us) in the Indirect speech
changes according to the person of the subject of the reporting verb.
Examples : (i) He said, “I'm hungry”. (Direct speech)
He said that he was hungry. (Indirect speech)
(ii) He said, “My laptop is heavy”. (Direct speech)
He said that his laptop was heavy. (Indirect speech)
· The second person pronoun (you, yours) of the reported speech is changed according
to ‘object’ of the reporting verb.
