Bharat Ratna to Karpoori Thakur
Karpoori Thakur, a prominent Gandhian socialist leader and former Chief
Minister of Bihar, is set to receive the posthumous honor of the 'Bharat
Ratna.' Serving as the Chief Minister from December 1970 to June 1971
and then again from December 1977 to April 1979, Thakur's contributions
to Bihar's political landscape are being recognized on the eve of his birth
centenary.
The announcement came through a communique from Rashtrapati
Bhawan, stating that the two-time Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori
Thakur, who passed away on February 17, 1988, has been posthumously
named for the prestigious Bharat Ratna. This acknowledgment
underscores his significance as the first non-Congress socialist leader to
hold the position of Chief Minister twice, initially for seven months in
December 1970 and later for two years in 1977.
