41 Don’t make it hard for people to give you
money

In these technical days there really is no reason not to
accept all major credit cards and in most cases EFTPOS.
Many people choose to pay all of their accounts on a credit
card and then pay that amount in full at the end of the
month. For many this is an excellent way to accrue frequent
flyer points without actually flying and for others it is a
way of reducing mortgage payments.

When making large purchases, such as computers, fur-
niture or accommodation and airfares, I always use my
American Express card because I earn frequent flyer points.
I can also use this card for the majority of my business
expenses including telephone, stationery, petrol, printer
cartridges and much more. Normally at the end of the year
the resulting frequent flyer points are enough for my wife
and I to have a holiday.

Keeping this in mind, if faced with the option of using
a business that takes American Express and one that does
not, assuming that the prices are similar, I will always use
the business that accepts the card. I speak to many other
business people in a similar situation and they all say the
exact same thing. Are you missing out on good business
simply because you don’t offer enough payment options?

Advertising the fact that you will take payments over
the phone is another important point. If you don’t mention
it people may not ask. If you take personal cheques, adver-
tise that fact as well.

Make it easy for people to do business with you.
