59 Use cheap classified advertisements to
     generate business

Classified advertisements are relatively inexpensive. For a
minimal cost you can have a couple of lines and a phone
number in a column that will be read by people who have
an interest in your product or service.

    A local courier company advertises the fact that they
will move furniture and fridges in the Garage Sales section
of the classified advertisements. They get 3–4 phone calls
per week that normally turn into jobs of about $20 in
value. Now this may not sound like a lot but the adver-
tisement costs $6 per week (it is only in the Saturday paper)
and it generates between $60 and $80 worth of business.

    In reality there are very few ways to advertise a business
that can offer such a high return on your advertising outlay.

    Mail-order businesses in particular focus on teaser
advertisements in the classified section to generate leads.
Limousine companies can advertise in the engagement sec-
tion, funeral directors in the deaths column.

    Think about a classified section that your particular
business could take advantage of and advertise today. Give
it time to work and if you are not getting a response,
change the wording of your advertisement. Persevere and
you will reap the benefits.
