8. Ignite with lists and infographics.
The BuzzSumo research of 100 million posts also showed that you double your
chances that people will share your content if it includes a list or an infographic.
It makes sense. Both list posts and infographics add an element of intrigue and
fun while still promising quick answers. Because of their skimmable format,
they satisfy our curiosity quickly in an information-dense environment.
Bonus tip: A list article with the number 10 in the headline is the best number
for social transmission, scoring four times the social shares as the next nearest
number in the study. After the number 10, list headlines with an odd-number get
shared 20 percent more than even-numbered posts.13
9. Boost social sharing with suggested stories.
In this book I shy away from recommending specific technologies because
they’ll become obsolete at some point and I don’t want to date the book
unnecessarily. But there is one little plug-in that delivers so much punch that it
deserves a shoutout: LinkedWithin.
It takes a lot of work to get somebody to visit your site, so once you get them
there, do what you can to keep them there. A great way to do that is to use a free
widget like LinkedWithin to suggest similar content for your readers. At the
bottom of each post it lists relevant articles from your blog for your readers to
enjoy. It has four powerful benefits:
It effectively resurrects relevant older content, giving you more bang for
your content investment.
It can increase page views. I haven’t been able to find any universal data on
this benefit, but for me, LinkedWithin increases page views on my site by 8
percent. That’s HUGE!
By taking your readers more deeply into relevant content, it increases the
chances of connection, subscription, or perhaps even clicks into commercial
parts of your site.
It increases social sharing. It’s not unusual to see new readers to my blog
tweet three, four, or more stories in a matter of a few minutes as they go
from post to post via LinkedWithin.
Bonus tip: LinkedWithin uses an image from your old posts as a visual
prompt to keep customers clicking … another great reason to always include a
photo or graphic with your content.
