They were not going to stay the night at the Hilton or at the Four Seasons. They were FINE,
freaked out insecure neurotic and emotional for 3 days. The boy Penny was full of wisdom.
How could he do this to mommy and daddy?
Clearly wisdom doesn’t accompany age. Sometimes the older we get the more folly is
exposed in us. I’m not calling Penny foolish but it was foolish to let his parents go thru the
motions all this time.
They had just been celebrating for seven days. Now the thrill was gone. But just when they
thought they could take it no more, they found Penny in the temple courts listening to the
teachers and asking them questions.
What was the boy feeding on these three days? Men have gone on weight loss programs
before but this was ridiculous. Penny was 12. What weight was he reducing? It’s not possible
that after seven days of none stop feasting the boy was in no shape to take the trip home.
And mommy and daddy weren’t so rich that they could spoil the boy with fancy 10 dollar
dinners. Yes the boy was seeking knowledge and his delight was in seeking instruction. But
how about just plain old obedience to the parents.
That was important too. Children should never underestimate the value and knowledge that
comes with parental age simply because they can’t quite entertain the imagination of a 12
year old child like these doctors could.
How’s honour to be found among thieves and not between parents and children? The increase
in knowledge should make a child humble about it. Penny had made mommy and daddy
proud before.
Why the cold shoulder and negative vibes now? What’s so special about year 12? Surely if
it’s a birthday Penny was looking forward to, his parents would have been proud to host one.
And year 12 is when Jewish children have their bar mitzvah.
So in any case, Penny would have got a party anyway and relatives and friends gathered
around him. Penny chose education. How about etiquette? After party, follow mommy and
daddy home. Bulls eye like a shot in the range.
Penny was the pride and joy of his parents but he sure wasn’t behaving himself. When the
parents found him, they asked within reason, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your
father and I have been anxiously searching for you”
Any kid with average intelligence would clearly see the folly of his actions. But no! Penny
was different. Special. Can stay behind parents searching for and I don’t know what at age
12. Or maybe just be happy that the parents thought it thru and searched for Penny because
they loved him.
