This 3-day course is geared to mechanical engineers and provides an
overview of project management fundamentals and techniques using
lecture, small group case studies, discussions and hands-on simulations.
The course enhances understanding of the Project Management
Institute’s (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) as well
as its application in everyday project management practices.
To amplify and accelerate learning as well as prepare registrants to
manage projects in the work environment, participants will work in teams
to build an individual real-world project idea from design to completion, The entire nature of project management is reviewed, including how
emulating the project management life cycle.
Project management principles and methodology are discussed in
settings where scarce resources, risky decisions and conflicting tensions
continually require sensible and effective compromises, with special
focus on planning, controlling and coordinating individual and group
efforts. Other topics include contracts, procurement management, and
quality management.
Each student will receive a copy of International Project Management
for Technical Professionals and The Knowledge Tornado: Bridging the
Corporate Knowledge Gap.
You Will Learn To
• Differentiate between project, program and sub-project by identifying
contrasting and related characteristics of each
• Employ an integrated case study to create deliverables, such as a
work breakdown structure and a project charter
• Identify key tools, techniques or outputs using an automated project
management tool: Critical path; Schedule compression; Crashing;
Slack/float; Fast tracking and Resource leveling
• Apply project scheduling concepts such as Activity Gantt Chart,
resource gram/ histogram; resource spreadsheet; and resource-
driven schedule
Who Should Attend
Engineers and technical professionals who have or will be assigned
project management responsibilities; project managers, project leaders
or anyone performing in those roles or will soon be performing in those
roles within the engineering industry
Special Requirements
Participants should have basic management skills and have an
understanding of basic accounting and budgeting skills, which will be
utilized in budgeting project costs and practical exercises during the
course.

The course is designed to help mechanical engineers prepare for MANAGING PROJECTS � PUBLIC COURSES

on Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) PMBOK grid, covering all
of the materials PMI considers important in the exam. This course is
revised often in order to reflect the most recent changes in the Project
Management Professional Examination and coverage of the Guide to the
Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
