Message from the President

July marks the halfway point in my year as President of the Nassau County Dental
Society. Working with an amazing Board has allowed us to achieve results that serve
both the profession and the public. It allows us to walk proudly as dentists and to
appreciate the benefits that we can provide to help society.
This year our “Give Kids a Smile” program headed by Dr. Schildhaus, Dr. Shreck and
Dr. Brofsky with a support team of 300 volunteers, examined almost 1500 disadvan-
taged children. Many of these children had never visited a dentist. The movies,
puppet shows, and take-home presents created impressions that will last a lifetime.
When I left the event, I felt proud to be a dentist. I encourage you to participate in
next year’s event. I believe that you will enjoy being part of this team.
To promote next year’s “Give Kids a Smile” event we are having a Vegas Night on December 6. This is a
night of fun, food, and an opportunity to socialize with colleagues. The event will take place at the Inn at
           New Hyde Park.

Under the guidance of Dr. Blauzvern and his committee we have been able to provide almost 100 hours of
continuing education. Many of these courses are at no charge for member dentists. They provide all the
hours of continuing education that are required for licensure by New York State, at virtually no cost.
Education is not only what you hear in a lecture or classroom. It is the ability to speak with colleagues and
compare techniques and results. To assist in this area, we have contracted with the “Inn at New Hyde
Park” as a place to provide four lectures with dinner included. This is free to members and is an excellent
opportunity to meet and socialize with other dentists. The NCDS has worked hard to provide not only
quality continuing education but those courses that are required for licensure by New York State.

Our Membership Committee headed by Dr. Leibowitz and Dr. Jaiswal have provided help to each of the
local residency programs. Residents completing their residency training were treated to a two-day
program preparing them for private practice. This was followed by a job fair. These lectures included a
lecture by Dr. Fitzgerald titled “I’m Done with My Residency—What Do I Do Now” followed by lectures on
investing and contracts. In addition, we have also participated with the Suffolk County Dental Society to
present a well-attended and successful Long Island Women’s Dental Conference (formally “Scrubs and
           Stilettos”).
On September 23 we will once again sponsor our Shredding event. This is a great opportunity to dispose
of old charts and documents in a recorded and secure manner. The event will take place in the parking lot
outside the society office. Registration is required and can be done on our website.
This year we have partnered with the Oral Cancer Foundation to sponsor a walk/run event, in an effort to
fight oral cancer. The walk will take place at Bethpage State Park on Sunday September 10. It will consist
of a 5k walk/run starting at 8am. You can register directly from the NCDS website.
We all seem to get caught up in our everyday lives, but things are changing rapidly in our profession. This
year members of our Board represented Nassau County at the NYSDA House of Delegates and on the
advocacy council. The issues ranged from licensure problems to items concerning insurance companies
and government policies. These issues affect the way that we practice and the manner in which we are
able to lead our lives. I urge you to take a moment and visit both the ADA website and the NYSDA website
to view these new issues. I believe that you will see the value in working together. If you want to get
more involved and have a say in the future of our profession, join and take an active role on our Board.
If you listen to the news or read a newspaper, you know that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing
the way we live. Many of you may have tried ChatGPT or another form of AI. The effect on the dental
                                                                                               Continued on page 8
