Placement guidelines
The placement component is a vital part of your course and it is essential that you work
with the college to enable us to maintain good relationships with placement providers. If
you are helpful, co-operative and show initiative in your placement, then you will be
showing professionalism and this will help you in your future career. Your placement
supervisor will note this good practice and it will reflect in your report. If you do not display
these skills it may cause difficulties for yourself and also any fellow students who may
follow you. Full time vocational students attend two two week blocks in each year and
mixed study students will complete 75 hours of placement during the summer term.
During your course you will need to successfully complete your placements. This involves
excellent attendance, punctuality and professionalism. Placements do not receive
payment for accepting students. As a visitor it is important that you respect your invitation
to learn in a practical environment and behave appropriately and follow the guidelines
of the setting.
Placement attendance is not optional and must be attended. You will need to make up
any time missed in placement in order to fulfil your hours. These hours will need to be
made up in college holiday time as there will be no time available during term time to
fulfil extra hours. This year due to Covid, we will not be commencing placements until
after Christmas. This means it will be VITAL that you attend every day to ensure you
achieve the hours needed to pass the course.
Students Responsibilities in Placement
1. Please contact the establishment prior to the start of a placement to introduce
yourself and confirm arrangements. You may be asked to make a visit before the
placement commences.
2. Respect and abide by the practices of the establishment.
3. Inform your placement supervisor of the course/course title/name and phone
numbers of the course leader and your tutor.
4. Students need to dress appropriately for the environment. It is a good idea to ask
what is seen as suitable clothing during your initial telephone contact/preliminary
visit – as some placements do not like/allow students to wear jeans, trainers, high
heels etc. You should always make sure that you limit the amount of jewellery
and make up etc that you wear. Not only are you representing yourself and the
college but also it may contravene the Health and Safety regulations of the
establishment.
5. Be prepared and available to be in placement between the hours of 9.00a.m.
and 4.00 p.m. Staff usually work very long hours and it is good practice for you to
get used to the routine and different shift patterns.
